Full Job Description

Here at Hitachi Rail, we are looking for an experience Team Leader to join our Production team, who has prior experience of Weld and/or Plating & Fabrication. As a Welding Team Leader you will use your experience of leading and motivating small teams ensuring that targets such as quality, cost and safety are consistently met.

Having existing knowledge of Weld and/or Fabrication will enable to you support and encourage the team on technical aspects, being a sounding board for new ideas or improvements.

Please note, this role will require the successful candidate to work 12hr shift, Monday to Thursday, with a rotation of Early shift (10% shift allowance) and Late shift (30% shift allowance), shift patterns below:

Early shift: 6am - 6pm

Late Shift: 6pm - 6am

Role Responsibilities…

Specifically, you will be responsible for the following deliverables:

  • Day to day operational management of a team, being the initial point of contact, resolving issues, driving the required behaviours and escalating to section leader only by exception.

  • Dedicated and focused supervision on the trains whilst the build is progressing and challenging any Non-Value Added behaviours.

  • Coordinating the team to complete SOP's within the agreed time whilst maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and efficiency (adherence to Hitachi Rail Europe's Health and Safety policy).

  • Delivery of key operational targets including product delivery, achieving 100% SOPs completion and striving for zero quality defects.

  • Deputise for and support section leaders with daily activities (team briefing, attend meetings etc.).

  • Informal management in regards to performance and behaviours of the team members including raising and discussing employee record entries.

  • Work with and support the relevant stakeholders in cross functional team tasks.

  • Lead and co-ordinate departmental investigations when required.

  • Support and co-ordinate continual improvement and development of existing/new processes and procedures - verify new documents and feedback potential areas for improvement.

  • Deliver and receive training and assessments as required to maintain competence for their role.

    Applicants should be able to demonstrate all of the Essential Requirements listed below:

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team on a daily basis with minimal supervision.

  • Able to oversee a variety of welding / fabrication tasks including coded welding to relevant standards in TIG or MIG

  • An understanding of health and safety requirements of a working welding environment

  • Ability to work unsupervised - able to make decisive, informed decisions within the welding environment.

  • Experience of deputising in management/supervisory position.

  • Strong Health and Safety ethos.

  • Strong interpersonal / communication skills at all levels

  • Ability to learn new skills to a high standard and train others. To deliver high standard training to colleagues

  • Work closely with and support the Section Leader (including deputising). Have previous experience of deputising for a superior


  • Desirable
  • Management qualification or previous experience in a production/manufacturing environment (desirable)

  • Experience within an Operational Railway Environment would be advantageous.
