Full Job Description

The ideal candidate will be responsible for ECM C-code implementation for Lotus and third-party engine applications. This will lead to progressing to VCU / EDU model based auto code software development at the appropriate project timing.,

  • Experience with writing C-code software, ideally for engine management systems and possibly transmission control systems. Be able to implement the software for new functions, test and calibrate.

  • Carry out vehicle and engine controls system development to Lotus or customer development processes.

  • Prepare for and attend offsite testing and climatic test trips when required.

  • Create control algorithm specifications.

  • Create or modify calibration procedures for new or developing control algorithms.

  • Design engine control systems to satisfy the emissions and performance objectives.

  • Investigate and resolve issues relating to engine and/or transmission control.

  • Support manufacturing and after-sales departments with issues relating to powertrain controls and integration.

  • Issue reports on development work undertaken and provide input to status reports.

  • Preparation of Powertrain technical documentation including reports and presentation material.

  • Provide guidance on implementation and calibration of control algorithms.

  • Provide technical input to proposals for new projects.

  • Schedule, supervise, make changes and correlate results from emission test work.

  • Specify ECU I/O for new systems.

  • Support Chief Engineer or Executive Engineer at supplier or customer visits

  • Train / assist in career development of department engineers and junior engineers

  • Understand then calibrate engine control algorithms using appropriate calibration tools.

  • Develop solutions relating to the integration of powertrain control systems within the whole vehicle electrical architecture.

  • Experience of calibration tools like Inca or CANape and networking tools like CANoe

  • Experience of version control tools like Microsoft Azure DevOps

    Engineering degree / HNC or equivalent experience.

  • A thorough understanding of automotive legislative requirements.

  • A thorough understanding of powertrain controls strategies and software development.

  • Able to understand and write C-code.

  • High level PC skills expected (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).

  • Familiarity with calibration development tools and techniques.

  • Automotive powertrain experience, and OBD gasoline calibration experience.

  • Outgoing/confident nature and ability to work as part of a team.

  • Self-reliant and self-starting - takes responsibility for overall delivery and ownership of projects and tasks to completion.

  • Should possess a very high degree of self-motivation.

  • Will exhibit a high level of attention to detail.

  • High level leadership qualities.

  • Excellent communication skills.


  • Desirable:

  • Engineering degree, masters, PhD.

  • Membership of appropriate institution (IMechE).

  • Knowledge of advanced powertrain developments, with an emphasis on CO2 reduction.

  • Advanced combustion analysis & calibration management tools.

  • Calibration background & a thorough understanding of the calibration process.

  • Recent delivery of programs at a senior level, within a calibration department.

  • Thorough understanding of combustion engine development.

  • Flexible, motivated and delivery driven.

  • Planning skills and coordination of project activities will be expected to be developed.

  • Second language would be advantageous.
