Full Job Description

Over a thousand people live, work or learn at Woodhall, whilst many thousands visit every year. This historic, yet innovative and dynamic rural estate encompasses substantial property portfolios, farmland, woodland, parkland, rivers, wetlands and much more.
A role with prime responsibility for, and focus on delivering, an exceptional level of presentation, maintenance and dynamic conservation of a historic and nationally important parkland and diverse estate landscapes. This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic and energetic individual with a can-do attitude to join a forward-thinking and fast-paced team to care for inspiring landscapes and special places. Balancing the conservation interest of the grounds with recreational use and opportunities will be key to this role.
Role includes the requirement for (non-exhaustive list):

  • Pro-actively carrying out practical site maintenance and conservation tasks.

  • Ground care duties, including: regular grass cutting, topdressing, brush cutting, weed control, soft landscaping, turfing and ground repair in formal areas.

  • Maintenance of the grounds within the historic Walled Garden.

  • Ensuring a positive experience to users of the site through presentation, communication and involvement in events and activities.

  • Vermin control, including deer, rabbits, foxes and squirrels.

  • Flexibility to perform other tasks associated to the safe and efficient operation of the Estate.

    Must have:

  • Current driving licence.

  • Current firearms licence and experience in vermin/deer control.

  • Good machinery skills and competence in operating tractors, mowers and brush cutters.

  • Proficient knowledge and experience of practical application of legislation, regulations, procedures and best practice relating to ground care and forestry.

  • Either professional experience or a personal background in the countryside/rural life/outdoors.

  • Discretion and accountability.

  • Motivation and initiative to work independently at times, whilst also being a strong team-player to work successfully within the wider Estate team.


  • Desirable:
  • An NPTC CS30 and CS31 chainsaw certificate

  • NPTC PA1 and PA6 pesticide certificate or similar and have demonstrable working experience of use.

  • Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1/2

  • Rough terrain Telehandler certificate

  • Basic IT skills.


  • Please note that this role will demand a flexible approach to working hours, including weekends and evenings.
