  • In this position you will be responsible for planning, organising, and controlling the operation to meet the company's present and long-term service and quality targets to initiate systems to control the cost per piece whilst maintaining a motivated workforce. Working closely with other operations managers and support functions you will drive a culture of continuous improvement by living Global SOP, Focus strategy and embracing EOS initiatives toward making a better working environment.

    Key responsibilities:

    Operational Management and contingency planning:
  • Manage and direct the operation; direct, lead and revise the implementation of Contingency Plans.

  • To work closely with operations management team and support functions to drive a culture of continuous improvement by living Global SOP, Focus strategy and embracing EOS initiatives toward making a better working environment.

  • To ensure that Operation works to maximum effect in line with company strategic goals regardless of the circumstances.

  • Develop and execute all necessary business recovery plans enabling a customer first approach to everyday business.

  • The nature of the company's business dictates that procedures and routings of material are constantly changing. It is the job holder's responsibility to ensure that these changes are implemented, monitored and the efficiency reported to Senior Management.


  • Compliance:
  • Comply with all regulatory agencies applicable to our network and hub operations.

  • Ensure awareness of policies and rules, maintain commitment on Quality and Environmental Systems, identify and promote continuous improvements aligning with Company strategies on quality and environment.

  • Ensure awareness of policies and rules and maintain commitment on Health and Safety improvement projects and / or provisions defined at higher level for department, review performance and drive implementation of efficient counter measures.

  • To certify full adherence of Operations Dept. to Global SOP, ISO Quality & Environment Standards.


  • Stakeholder management:
  • Ensure strong relationships with critical personnel required to maintain business continuity.

  • Fully support and engage with QCC, SQ, Engineering, H&S, and Network Planning

  • Keep and develop contacts with external partners e.g Airport operations, External Airlines and DHL Service Centres

  • Develop relationships with Key ACS partners.

  • Develop contacts with all sub-contract trucking companies.


  • Reporting /analysis
  • Operations Performance Management Scorecard

  • Cost per piece analysis

  • Productivity performance


  • Safety

  • Managers and Supervisors are responsible for the Health and Safety of their employees as well as having a thorough understanding of their Health and Safety Responsibilities and the risks associated with their area of responsibility


  • Line management:
  • Identify, recruit, retain, develop, lead and motivate properly skilled departmental supervisors.

  • Define development plans, outline expectations, identify training needs, conduct monthly 1:2:1's with direct reports and ensure 1:2:1's completion for all staff in the operation.

  • Evaluate annual performance and support the pay review process.

  • Actively develop and participate in annual Panel Review, utilising LEADS methodology

  • Promotion of Performance Improvement of staff in accordance with the performance improvement procedure.

  • Fully support and encourage disciplinary action and investigations.

  • Proactively monitor performance and conduct to address any short falls or any unacceptable behaviour.

  • Understand the benefits of diversity in the business, promoting a diverse team ensuring an understanding of the Equality Act is maintained.

  • Build and develop a team ethos across all shifts by embracing DHL 21st Century Manager concept/ ICCC/CIS & CIM /As One/ Can Do/ CSR/ First Choice/Performance Dialogue Boards, Team Briefings, and other initiatives to ensure that all Operations work to maximum effect in line with company strategic goals regardless of the circumstances.

  • Understanding of general air cargo operations, associated aircraft and Aviation legislative policies desirable
