This role involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including park staff, local communities, and accessibility organisations, to assess, develop and maintain accessible routes throughout the park.

The remit of this post will be to assess the Public Rights of Way (PRoW) network across Northumberland National Park in order to determine what percentage of the routes are compliant with the nationally recognised 'Miles without Stiles' (MwS) definition.

Using Geographical Information System (GIS) software and data gathered from desk-based analysis and on-site surveys, undertake an accessibility audit to create a database of the Public Rights of Way network, identifying which sections are currently compliant with the MwS definition.

  • Sound knowledge of countryside recreation/rights of way issues.

  • Experience of Geographical Information System software and/or a keen willingness to learn these and other IT skills.

  • Ability to read and interpret maps and use a compass to navigate and confirm a location.

  • Ability to monitor and survey rights of way.

  • Able to work on own initiative, alone and unsupervised.

Identifying sections of non-compliant path for targeted investment and path/infrastructure improvement to upgrade these to become compliant with the MwS definition, thereby improving accessibility across Northumberland National Park.
