  • Why is this role important and how does it fit into the team, department and wider firm?

    The purpose of the MI Analyst Business Partner role is to work closely with the firm's legal and central teams to provide insight and guidance on how data and MI can add value to their business goals and objectives. You will build close relationships with clients, lawyers and support staff in a given Target Market Group (TMG) or central support team, taking time to understand their objects and concerns and provide advice and management information (MI) solutions which support the objectives and resolve issues.

    You will develop MI solutions including reports, dashboards and client portals using Microsoft technologies. You'll apply best practice to ensure high quality solutions aligned to real business need.

    By having a deep understanding of one or more TMG, the aim is to ensure that the firm's MI solutions deliver the most value to our clients, lawyers and support staff. Ensuring access to relevant data, in a secure manner, and aligned to one or more key performance indicators.

    What does the role actually involve?
  • Act as a business partner for one or more TMG / central team by:

  • Consulting leadership teams to understand business goals and concerns

  • Acting as a point of contact within the data team

  • Work with clients to understand their own data journey and how we can provide value through data and MI

  • Improving operational effectiveness of data by providing MI and data quality reporting

  • Input into data improvement initiatives acting as a representative for your assigned TMG/ central teams

  • Assist your colleagues in the Data team by:

  • Being an SME for business problems and technical solutions

  • Represent your TMG/ central teams during technical decision making

  • Provide insights into your assigned TMG/ central teams for wider IT department

  • Design, development and maintain the firms MI and data analytics solutions including: Reporting; Analytics tools; Dashboards

  • Ad hoc analysis of data in order to support operational business needs supported by your knowledge of you assigned TMG / central teams

  • Provide analytical support for business development activities

  • Ensure that the firms rigorous information security practices are maintained and applied to any MI and data analytics solutions

  • Collaborate in the definition, communication, and governance of the firm's data strategy

  • Collaborate with other colleagues in the IT department to deliver solutions which implement the data strategy

  • Active involvement in daily scrums

  • Testing and peer reviews

  • Concise technical documentation

  • Training IT technical and support teams in relevant aspects of new solutions

  • Promoting, encouraging and supporting best practice

    What technical skills are required for someone to be successful and enjoy the role?

  • Deep knowledge of Microsoft BI technologies including: TSQL; SQL Management Studio; SSRS; Power BI

  • Experience of SQL Server 2016 and upwards

  • Developing and maintaining enterprise grade MI solutions


  • Desirable skills:
  • Mathematical thinking and statistics

  • Knowledge/ experience of Visual Studio Online

  • Using Visual Studio database projects to manage source control of data assets

  • Working as part of an agile development team (SCRUM)

  • Knowledge/ experience of continuous integration

  • Knowledge/ experience of Microsoft Azure

  • Knowledge/ experience of Oracle DB


  • Who would be a good fit for this role?

    As part of the IT team, you would be expected to have the following skills and experience:
  • Excellent people and communication skills, ideally with experience of acting as a business partner

  • Will have been part of a team which was responsible for the successful delivery of at least one major MI solution

  • Proven ability to deliver projects on time, with strong organisational, time and task management skills

  • A natural enthusiasm for technology and the ability to excite and engage colleagues about MI and data analytics

  • Good knowledge of the principles and best practice in MI development

  • Actively collaborates with others, working towards a shared goal; excellent stakeholder management skills

  • Sound analytical mind with the capability to articulate sometimes complex technical concepts

  • Ability to effectively prioritise and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment

  • A commitment to quality and attention to detail

  • Ability to manage your own time to ensure delivery of projects within defined timescales

    Our expectation is that, on average, you'll work from home for no more than three days per week, with the remainder of your time either spent with your colleagues in the office or working from other locations as work demands dictate, e.g. courts, client offices, conferences etc. This is an average expectation over time and we know that there will be variations from week to week.
