Full Job Description

As a member of the IMS & Technical Department you will provide technical support across all operational activities of the business, including Bulk Operations, Industrial Gases, Speciality Gases, Maintenance and Logistics through; Carrying out design for mechanical and pressure systems, Providing robust analysis and calculations for design validation, Providing accurate design documentation and specifications, Evaluating material and equipment selection.
The role will also be responsible for providing a comprehensive response to any associated external and internal queries coming from Customers and ALUK plants.

The role is a critical and leading role, ensuring the technical compliance of our industrial activities for both existing and new installations. It will also allow the individual to develop their competency and recognition being part of the wider Air Liquide technical community.

  • The design and specification of equipment for the filling and storage of gases both in liquified (including cryogenic) and gaseous form including standard and special calculations.

  • Technical assistance to the Project and Engineering Departments.

  • Provision of technical input for any proposed changes or response to equipment failure or non performance etc.

  • Continual review of related international and engineering standards and industrial practices to ensure continued compliance. (E.g Monitoring the requirements for the periodic inspection of plant)

  • Monitoring the creation of new documentation /drawings with respect to adherence to established methods, standards, format

  • Predicting behaviour of products within proposed applications, using knowledge of thermodynamic, chemical and physical properties

  • Development and maintenance of relevant internal technical standards and procedures

  • Engaging with Group and Cluster stakeholders to ensure alignment of the Air Liquide UK design philosophy to the Group Technical Standards, Specifications and ways of working

  • Commit to professional development, to grow as a future Design Authority

    Experience with PED and pressure equipment design

  • Experience with TPED requirements

  • Exposure to ASME BPVC, ASME B31.1 and ASME B31.3

  • Proficient in stress analysis calculations, both hand calculations and software assisted

  • Proficient Mechanical knowledge

  • Basic Electrical knowledge

  • Knowledge of Physics and Chemistry of gases

  • Familiarity with thermodynamic calculations - heat exchange, refrigeration cycles, behaviour of real gases, cryogenic applications

  • Familiar with 2D CAD

  • Proficient with MathCad

  • Proficient with 3D modelling software

  • Proficient with FEA software (Simulator or Ansys)

  • Proficient with Control Automation (eg. pneumatic automated valves and control panels)

  • Planning & Organisation Skills

  • Attention to detail.

  • Proactive through initiating actions and achieving goals

  • Communication Skills - both written and verbal

  • Ability to work autonomously

  • Able to swap between design and implementation

  • Critical thinking

  • Teamwork oriented with the ability to work on their owned initiative

  • Masters or Bachelor degree in Mechanical / Industrial Engineer (ideally working to Chartership) or relevant experience

  • Demonstrated experience of design, verification and installation of mechanical or pressure systems on multiple projects.
