Full Job Description

Nuclear Services is a specialist technical area, and we bring together technical capabilities to support the Hinkley Point C (HPC) and Sizewell C (SZC) nuclear new build projects and the existing Nuclear Operations operating stations and decommissioning sites.

As a Fire Safety Engineer, you will ensure the HPC design is developed in line with Nuclear New Build requirements and within the project schedule, to allow detailed design and construction to proceed as planned.

In addition, you will be reviewing and conducting fire hazard analysis from the HPC responsible designer and confirming acceptability to meet UK nuclear safety requirements. The work also extends to maintaining fire safety on the operating and defueling AGRs plus support to Britain's only PWR, Sizewell B.,

  • Responsible for oversight and acceptance of fire strategy and system documents, fire zoning reports and drawings, and other supporting documents. Conducting surveillance activities to support this.

  • Technically reviewing fire safety analysis work from the HPC responsible designer and confirming acceptability to meet UK nuclear safety requirements.

  • Modelling and analysing the impact of hazards on overall plant safety - primarily focussing fire and explosion.

  • Monitoring design changes arising from suppliers and construction activities.

  • Developing solutions to issues identified, making recommendations and pursuing through to closure.

    Gloucester Business Park. Hybrid with a minimum of 2-3 days in the office per week.


  • Are you an experienced Engineer with a background in Fire Protection Engineering or Fire Hazard Analysis? Are you keen to apply your experience to a nuclear energy context? Above all, are you passionate about helping Britain achieve Net-Zero?,
  • Degree-level or equivalent qualification in engineering or scientific field.

  • Experience in design and safety principles in modern high hazard industries.

  • Experience in the application of UK and international Fire codes and standards.

  • An appetite for developing practical solutions to problems and following through to completion.

  • Ability to work independently, to plan and manage design reviews, and work directly with designers.

  • Strong evidence of continuing professional development.


  • Desirable, noting that this intended to be a spread of desired skills & experience, it is not anticipated that a single candidate will be expert in all areas:

  • A Chartered Engineer with a relevant body such as the Institute of Fire Engineers.

  • Application of fire and explosion modelling tools (e.g. CFAST).

  • Experience UK nuclear safety cases, including application of ALARP principles.

  • Experience of systematic hazard analysis on plant important to safety.

  • Knowledge of Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR), Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) and European Pressurised Water Reactor (EPR) designs.

  • Experience in working on the development of fire systems for life and asset protection, passive fire protection and commissioning.

  • Experience of Fire and Rescue Service operations or emergency management and response.
