Full Job Description

To support our transformation, we have a vacancy to join the distribution management team at our Peterborough and Cambridge sites.

The role

As Distribution Manager, you'll have responsibility for the safe and legal operation of the fleet and distribution operations at our Peterborough and Cambridge sites, ensuring continuous and effective management of our legal obligations to the Traffic Commissioner.

With 6 direct reports across two sites, who in turn manage c300 staff, you'll be accountable for the leadership of managerial and frontline teams who are trained and motivated to effectively ensure mail/parcel transportation between Plants, Network and Collection hubs, Delivery Offices and our external Customers.

You'll ensure safe operations through adherence to agreed safety policies and regulations, the legal operation of O licence vehicles and the optimisation of distribution operations and vehicle operating centres across the two sites.

Other key accountabilities:

  • Lead pipeline performance and continuous improvement activity utilising balanced scorecard/key performance indicator metric outputs including achieving targets for Depart To Time and Arrive To Time.

  • Professionalise distribution utilising programme enablers ensuring operational work plans are achieved efficiently and that the pipeline optimises the operation.

  • Manage individual and team performance for all Traffic Office Managers to include training plans, talent succession planning, conducting 121's and personal development plans.

  • Develop an excellent IR/ER climate with full involvement of Distribution employees and the CWU.

  • Co-ordinate robust special event plans and delivery and the coordination of local planning and resourcing.

  • Plan and deployment of annual network revision locally in conjunction with the CWU.

  • Build effective stakeholder relationships with peers, pipeline colleagues and our customers including fleet business partners, workshop managers, agency suppliers.


  • Attendance

    The operation runs 24/7, therefore the successful applicant must be flexible and able to travel to both Peterborough and Cambridge sites. Predominantly Monday to Friday, however flexibility is required to meet operational demands which may involve ad-hoc shift and weekend attendance.

    You need to demonstrate the following skills and experience on your CV:
  • Operational/distribution management experience.

  • Industry experience and working knowledge of logistics operations or a related industry, leading teams and delivering results.

  • O licence holder (beneficial).

  • Knowledge of UK road transport legislation, Certificate of Professional Competence qualified or be prepared to study to attain within 12 months (essential)

  • Knowledge of safety requirements and accident investigation.

  • Strategic planning and project management skills, data/budgetary analysis skills.

  • Ability to build strong stakeholder relationships and excellent influencing skills.

  • Negotiating with both CWU/CMA at local and area level.

  • Experience of Continuous Improvement.
