Full Job Description

We are looking for Male support staff with good communication skills, who are committed to supporting people to a high quality and willing to work day shifts, nightshifts with alternative weekend work.

The gentleman we support has an acquired brain injury (ABI), and some restricted vision. 2-1 support is provided at all time, you will always be working with a core member of the team. He is hoisted and uses a wheelchair to access the community. The role involves all aspects of personal care, PEG medication and NIPPY vent support. The gentleman requires his staff to be informal and support him with daily activities, such as shopping, getting up, dressing and washing. The gentleman has a cheeky personality and enjoys banter with staff and sees his staff as friends more than support workers. The position is within a well-established team who are supportive and easy to bond with. The gentleman enjoys football and animals, specifically parrots.

He can, at times, experience periods of paranoia and confusion and can also present with very challenging verbal behaviour. This is often from frustration with staff being unable to understand him as he also has aphagia (slurred speech) meaning he can be hard to understand at times. He can also be very repetitive due to his impaired short term memory and this can be quite mentally challenging for staff. Due to the nature of his behaviours and characteristics, staff will need resilience and patience and a positive mental attitude when on session.

All staff receive PBS training to learn strategies for managing this behaviour. New staff will always be on with an experienced member of the team allowing you to learn his daily routines and de-escalating strategies.
