Full Job Description

  • Manning the reception desk and telephones.

  • Making appointments and taking visit requests.

  • Filing/entering data, either in paper or computerised records.

  • Filing medical records.

  • Dealing with patient queries, e.g. test results and hospital admissions.

  • Dealing with all other queries e.g. from pharmacies, hospitals and other

  • Arranging hospital transport.

  • Sending e-mails and replying electronically to patients.

  • Electronic workflow

  • Registration forms and patient administration

  • Opening and securing the practice premises, switching computer systems on and off, and preparing the public and consulting rooms for each day.

  • Acting as a link between GPs and dealing with associated paperwork.


  • The duties of this post are wide-ranging and will require the post holder to be flexible in adapting to changing circumstances.

  • We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced call handler to work at our two site GP Practice. The successful applicant will be required to work at both health centres and as such, preference will be given to individuals who have a driving licence and transport. Successful applicants will be expected to work at both of our practice sites in Gunnislake and Callington. Preference will be given to applicants with access to transport and some site swapping is required.

    We are recruiting a committed, hardworking team player, who is computer literate and has experience within a customer or patient facing role. The successful applicant must be able to work under pressure and use own initiative. Previous experience of general practice/ NHS call handler work and SystmOne is required for the Bank role.

    Applicants must demonstrate a minimum of GCSE Maths and English at grade C or equivalent.

    Our medical receptionist team are the first point of contact for patients and visitors to the practice whether in person or on the phone: receiving, signposting, directing and assisting them in accessing the appropriate service or healthcare professional as well as helping with enquiries and responding to complaints. While also providing assistance to the wider practice team and other healthcare providers, potential candidates must have strong customer service skills, be an effective communicator; both face to face and on the phone.,

    Applicants must be able to work between the hours of 8am-8pm. Saturday morning working may be required.
