Full Job Description

We are recruiting for a Bank Hospice Doctor to join the Hospice Medical Team. We are looking to recruit a doctor with experience of independent work on a hospice specialist palliative care team. This is an exciting opportunity to use and develop your skills in specialist palliative care. The post requires participation in a weekend rota (non-resident), and opportunities for ad hoc weekday sessional work and cover on Bank Holidays.

Weekend working comprises 2 days and 3 nights working from 5pm on Friday evening to 9am on Monday morning. Some weekend doctors work split weekends and this is arranged subject to discussion with individual doctors.

Weekend days and bank holidays require up to 8 hours on-site during the day time each day and then off-site first on-call, ending at 9am the following morning. A first on-call doctor may need to return to the hospice during the evening or overnight when a patient needs face to face review. The post-holder will review hospice inpatients and will be available to give palliative care phone advice to other professionals in Barnsley community and hospital, as well as palliative care patients and families via the Pallcall advice line. A consultant will be available for phone advice and support at all times.

The sessional rates are set with reference to the NHS Specialty doctor pay scale and for bank hospice doctors varies between £101.02 - £129.74 per session. The starting rate will be set dependent on previous experience., The Hospice has 10 in-patient beds and a Therapy/Support Unit (out patients and day hospice). In 2023/24 there were around 170 admissions to the IPU. Counselling and Bereavement Support, Complementary Therapy and Carer Support are also provided

We currently employ 2 consultants and 4 substantive specialty doctors in Palliative Medicine, who staff the Hospice IPU and provide district wide support, working closely with GPs, community nurses, doctors and other consultants in primary, community and acute care settings. The medical team also includes a GP specialty trainee doctor, F1 doctor also a number of bank hospice doctors who work on the weekend rota and cover ad hoc week days.

The Hospice has an SLA with SWYFT to provide Responsible Officer services to the Hospice, reviewing medical appraisals and making recommendation to the GMC with regard to revalidation.

Barnsley Metropolitan District is home to around 250,000 people with many former mining communities. The Specialist Palliative Care Service across the district has grown in the last ten years.

£101.02 to £129.74 a session The starting rate will be set dependent on previous experience.
